Building a Resilient GIS Infrastructure for a Growing City
The City of Portland, Tennessee had found itself at a pivotal moment, as usage of its Geographic Information System (GIS) was pushing the limits of its resources.
With the City having grown substantially in recent years, its staff had implemented and deployed a wide range of GIS services and applications, making it indispensable for daily operations and driving broad system adoption. With both municipal staff and the public relying more and more on the GIS for planning and decision-making, the system had become stretched thin. Recognizing the need for expert guidance to navigate the challenges they were facing, the City engaged dymaptic to conduct a comprehensive Enterprise GIS Assessment. Our objective was to evaluate their current GIS infrastructure, identify areas for improvement, and provide actionable recommendations to improve system performance, simplify administrative processes, and accommodate future growth.
Our analysis to that point had produced a thorough overview of the City’s system, but our team was not content to stop there. Armed with full knowledge of the GIS in its current state, as well as where the City wanted to take it in the future, our team developed a set of tailored tools and recommendations aimed at improving system performance, optimizing administrative workflows, enhancing security measures, and paving the way for friction-free future growth. To summarize all this information, we provided a comprehensive report outlining all of the assessment’s findings and recommendations both at a high-level and point by point. To help City personnel in their planning, we also developed and delivered a prioritized, step-by-step roadmap of action items to make achieving optimal implementation of these recommendations simple. And finally, drawing from our deep knowledge of community resources and GIS automation, we curated a custom collection of administrative and analytical scripts and delivered these to the City with documentation detailing how they could streamline GIS administration and ensure the system remains in tip-top shape for many years to come.
